How to run speed tests using AK-Fi apps

April 10, 2024

AK-Fi allows you to run speed tests at both the network and device level. Here’s how:

For best speed test results, use the Adapt feature in your AK-Fi Home App. Using this feature will trigger a speed test to be run directly on your gateway.

How to run a Speed Test

  1. Scroll to the Adapt section on the home page of the App.
  2. The latest result of the Internet Speed Test will be shown. Tap on it to reveal Speed Test History.
  3. Tap on Check Speed. This will trigger a speed test from your gateway and provide you with the latest results.

  5. Tapping on View all opens a new page with the speed test results for the last 30 days and a list of the most active devices based on data consumption on your network.

  1. Scroll down to the bottom of the Homepage.
  2. Just above the most recent internet speed measurement, tap Check speed.

  4. After the speed test is complete, the new measurement will be displayed.
  5. Tap View all, to see the last 30 days of speed tests as well as the most active devices on your network.

Network Speed Test limits

While the Ethernet ports on SuperPods, PowerPods, and Pods are fully capable of operating at their rated speeds in actual use, the speed test application built into the pods may be limited in the results that can be measured and displayed. This in no way affects actual WAN performance, but in some cases, you may see some unexpected results in the speed tests reported.

  • Overhead will always limit the reported throughput on a speed test when compared to the physical layer's capabilities. On a Gigabit Ethernet port with a Gigabit WAN connection, you can expect about 940 Mbps as the maximum throughput.
  • The built-in ISP Speed Test is limited to reporting results of around 200 Mbps for the original Plume Pod, even if the actual throughput achieved is higher. If you have a connection faster than this and have the original Pod as the gateway, you can use the Device Speed Test feature when your mobile is connected to the gateway pod to get a better idea of the speed coming into your gateway pod. If you have a PC or Mac, you can download the stand-alone OOKLA speed test App to run speed tests while connected to the gateway pod. If you have a Gigabit internet connection, keep in mind that the results will still be limited based on the WiFi connection to the Pod.
  • There is a known limitation in the reporting of the upload throughput on speed tests performed on the SuperPod with WiFi 6's 2.5 GbE Ethernet port, although this does not affect actual upload throughput.
  • The SuperPod with WiFi 6E, SuperPods, and PowerPods do not have any reporting limitations on speed tests of their Ethernet connections.

Notes

Running a speed test may affect the performance of other connected devices.

Speed Tests only test the connection at the gateway. Use the Device Speed Test feature to check the AK-Fi Home WiFi performance on the other pods in the network.

How do I view my device speeds in the AK-Fi Home app?

Unlike the Adapt feature in your AK-Fi Home App, this speed test measures the device's connection through the pods all the way to the internet.
  1. Go into the area of your home where you wish to check the AK-Fi Home performance.
  2. Ensure your mobile device running the AK-Fi Home app is connected to your AK-Fi Home network.
  3. Find your device under your profile in the People menu or from the device list in the Settings menu. The mobile device running the AK-Fi Home app will show the Plume logo (looks like an asterisk).
  4. On the device details screen, tap on the option for Device Internet Speed. The test will check both the upload and download speed.
  5. If the speed test fails, use the Retry button.
  6. The latest speed test result will always be displayed.
