GCI To Bring Lightning Fast 1 GIG red Internet To Matanuska Valley In Early 2016

August 26, 2015

With 1 GIG red, a farm in the Valley will have access to faster Internet than a mansion in Beverly Hills

Anchorage, Alaska – Today General Communication, Inc. (“GCI”) (NASDAQ: GNCMA), Alaska’s fastest Internet provider, announced that the company will expand its 1-gigabit-per-second Internet service, known as 1 GIG red, to its customers in the Mat-Su during the first quarter of 2016, as part of its campaign to deliver Alaska’s only 1 GIG service.

GCI will launch 1 GIG red in an Anchorage neighborhood next month. At the same time, GCI will upgrade all other red Internet customers to 500 Mbps from the current red speed of 250 Mbps, already the fastest Internet service available in Alaska. GCI’s customers who are already on red Internet plans will receive these higher speeds with no increase in their monthly bill. A special new modem, which GCI is also providing to all current red Internet customers at no charge, is required to achieve 1 GIG and 500 Mbps.

GCI will fully deploy 1 GIG red in Anchorage this year and expand to the Mat-Su Valley and other Alaska markets in 2016 and 2017. The race to expand 1-gigabit Internet across the nation began in 2013, when the FCC challenged Internet providers to bring 1-gigabit service to communities in all 50 states. With GCI’s 1 GIG red launch in September in Anchorage and the 2016 1 GIG launch in the Mat-Su, GCI is putting Alaska on the high-tech map. 1 GIG service puts Anchorage and the Mat-Su ahead of cities like Los Angeles and Boston, where 1-gigabit service is currently not available for consumers.

“For more than 30 years, GCI has provided Alaskans with cutting-edge communications services, and offering the state’s fastest Internet service is another example of that,” said GCI President and CEO Ron Duncan. “We’re expanding our 1 GIG red service to the Mat-Su because we understand how technology enhances Alaskans’ lives by helping us connect with one another and the rest of the world.  Once 1 GIG is installed in the Mat-Su, a farm in Palmer will have access to faster Internet speed than a mansion in Beverly Hills.”

As a longtime sponsor of the Alaska State Fair, GCI representatives will be onsite celebrating 1 GIG red’s upcoming Mat-Su debut throughout the festivities from Thursday, Aug. 27 - Monday, Sept. 7. GCI will have fun giveaways available for attendees and answer questions about 1 GIG red and GCI’s other services.

Since 1979, GCI has invested over $3 billion to bring the latest telecommunication technologies to Alaska, reflecting GCI’s ongoing commitment to the innovation Alaska needs to support industry, education, health care, job growth and livability for today and the future.
