Caterpillar makes sure Alaskans get tough-as-nails Cat® S60 smartphone before any other domestic market
ANCHORAGE, ALASKA — GCI, Alaska’s largest telecommunications company, announced today that it will be the first wireless carrier in the United States to offer its customers the new Cat® S60 -- a rugged 4G LTE smartphone, and the first of its kind to feature thermal imaging. The Cat S60 has a strengthened die cast frame and is impervious to dust, achieving beyond military specification for shock and drop, plus the ability to operate at extreme temperatures; from minus 13 degrees Fahrenheit to 131 degrees Fahrenheit.
“Alaskans love to push things to extremes and we are notoriously hard on our phones,” said Paul Landes, GCI Senior Vice President of Consumer Services. “I have lots of friends whose phones have died after being dunked in a glacial-fed river or dropped during a hike in the backcountry. GCI is pleased to be able to offer the Cat S60 to our customers—this rugged phone is going to be able to handle whatever challenges Alaskans can dish up.”
The Cat S60, which is now available to Alaska customers statewide, includes an embedded thermal camera that visualizes heat that is invisible to the naked eye, highlighting temperature contrasts. It can pick up heat and measure surface temperatures from a distance of up to 50 to 100 feet and see through obscurants such as smoke.
“In addition to essentially letting you see in complete darkness, the Cat S60 has very practical uses like detecting heat loss around windows and doors, spotting moisture and missing insulation, and identifying over-heating electrical appliances and circuitry,” said Landes.
“The Cat S60’s thermal imaging capabilities are going to be a huge benefit for Alaska building professionals, utility workers and emergency responders.”
In addition to the thermal camera, the S60 features a 13MP main camera with dual flash, as well as a 5MP front-facing camera, both of which are able to take underwater photography in addition to thermal images.
The Cat S60’s strengthened frame is impervious to dust and beyond military specification for shock and drop, with the ability to operate at extreme temperatures from minus 13 degrees Fahrenheit to 131 degrees Fahrenheit. The scratch-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass 4 screen offers a super bright display and multi-touch capability features auto wet finger and glove support.
Operating on the latest version of the Android operating system, Marshmallow, the S60 has a Lithium Ion battery with Quick Charge 2.0, which runs on data speeds of up to 150 Mbps and offers extended storage of up to 128 GB, in addition to the 32 GB of ROM Flash and 3 GB of RAM.
