GCI contributes $25,000 to support care for and conservation of Arctic, sub-Arctic wildlife

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – As the Alaska Zoo celebrates 50 years of providing care for orphaned and injured wildlife, GCI is donating $25,000 in cash and in-kind contributions to support its continued mission. The support will help the Alaska Zoo continue to care for wildlife, promote education and conservation programs and provide a place for children and families to see and learn more about Arctic animals.

“We are proud to support the Alaska Zoo and its programs that allow all people a place to come together and learn about the wildlife in our state and enjoy some facetime with all kinds of animals they might not otherwise have the opportunity to see,” said GCI Senior Manager of Philanthropy Amanda Prasil. “We are pleased that the zoo is using GCI connectivity to power the Alaska Zoo’s education programs, distance learning, and polar bear camera.”

For the past 50 years the Alaska Zoo has provided a safe haven for orphaned and injured wildlife and has hosted events cherished by many, like the Zoo Lights and Walk on the Wild Side, in addition to its education and conservation efforts.

“With support from organizations like GCI, the Alaska Zoo is able to continue offering education programs, bolstering our conservation efforts, improving our facilities and so much more,” said Alaska Zoo Executive Director Pat Lampi. “We truly rely on our community partners to be able to accomplish our mission every day and GCI continues to be a great partner to us.”

The Alaska Zoo is GCI’s July Spotlight Partner. Each month, GCI “shines a spotlight” on an Alaska nonprofit by featuring them on digital displays in 30 GCI stores across the state and by sharing social media messaging and partnering for spots on iHeart radio stations. GCI’s Monthly Spotlight Partner program is valued at $180,000 annually.

GCI is committed to giving back to the communities it serves. Over the past 5 years, GCI has donated more than $10 million in cash, products, scholarships and grants to Alaska organizations like the Alaska Zoo. In addition, GCI provides employees with 16 hours of paid leave to volunteer with local organizations through the GCI Community Service program. In 2018, more than 660 GCI employees volunteered nearly 8,200 hours through this program.
