GCI waives fees for data, calls and texts to those affected by Alaska earthquake, supports regional chapter of American Red Cross

December 1, 2018

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — In response to the 7.0 magnitude earthquake that hit Alaska Friday morning, GCI will waive additional usage fees associated with voice calls, texts and data for wireless and home phone customers who live in the affected areas of Anchorage, Eagle River and the Matanuska-Susitna Valley.

“We know many of our customers will be trying to connect with family and friends in the wake of this natural disaster,” said Kate Slyker, chief marketing officer at GCI. “We want to assure you that if you live in the impacted area of Southcentral Alaska, you will not receive any additional usage charges on our wireless and home phone service during this time for data, text messages or voice call overages.”

GCI customers who live in the affected areas of Southcentral Alaska may utilize these services through Dec. 4. These services are for valid calls, texts and data usage from wireless devices and home phone lines.

A longtime supporter of The American Red Cross, GCI is also making an additional $5,000 donation to The American Red Cross of Alaska, which helps Alaska’s communities during disasters. The American Red Cross of Alaska is one of the 12 nonprofit partners that GCI recognized as part of its 2018 monthly community giving program, which provides funding and services for a new Alaska nonprofit each month.

In addition, GCI delivered prepaid phones and chargers to the emergency overnight shelter set up by the Red Cross at the Egan Civic & Convention Center in downtown Anchorage on Friday evening. These devices allowed for the group of more than 50 displaced Anchorage residents who utilized the shelter to call family members and friends.

The majority of GCI stores are working to remain open to serve customers in Southcentral Alaska. At the time of this release, the stores in Wasilla, Palmer, Eagle River, Midtown and the 5th Avenue Mall will remain closed as of Saturday, Dec. 1, as the damage is further assessed and power is restored.
