Agreement includes ESPN and ABC Family
Alaska’s largest cable provider, General Communication, Inc. (NASDAQ: GNCMA), reached a seven-year agreement with Disney networks, a lineup that includes ESPN and ABC Family channels. The deal, negotiated by the National Cable Television Cooperative, allows GCI to continue broadcasting 16 popular sports, news and entertainment channels into 2021 without interruption and adds products like the SEC Network and on-demand programming.
“This new long-term agreement provides Alaskans stability on ESPN content through multiple platforms and brings added value to our subscribers,” said Bob Ormberg, Vice-President of Content Products. “More and more, Alaskans want the ability to watch programs when they want to and where they want to, and this deal adds convenience options, such as streaming and online viewing rights, for our customers.”
Included in the agreement, GCI gained rights to offer the full suite of Disney and ESPN streaming apps, including WatchESPN, WatchDisney, WatchABC and WatchABCFamily, as well as additional video-on-demand products, all of which will soon be added to the GCI GO and GCI On Demand lineups. GCI GO provides more than 60 channels of online programming available for smartphones, tablets, game consoles and computers. In addition, GCI will immediately be adding new Disney stations, including the SEC Network in HD, in most markets statewide.
