FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
ALASKA LEGISLATURE EXTENDS REGULATORY COMMISSION OF ALASKA
JUNEAU, AK -- Last night, the Alaska Senate
passed House Bill 111 which extends the life of the Regulatory
Commission of Alaska (RCA) until 2007. The bill was sponsored by
Governor Frank Murkowski and passed the Senate by a vote of 20 to
0.
Dana Tindall, GCI senior vice president of legal and regulatory
affairs issued the following statement. "This is a tremendous
victory for consumers and competition alike. The Senate recognized
the value of the RCA's role in protecting consumers and voted to
renew the Agency for four-years without any statutory changes that
affect the manner by which utilities are regulated.
We would like to thank the Governor, AARP, the Alaska Public
Interest Research Group, Maniilaq Association, Norton Sound Health
Corporation, Bristol Bay Area Health Corporation, The Alaska
Injured Workers Association, the Alaska State Homebuilders
Association, the Alaska Senate and the members of the Alaska House
who voted for this legislation. They recognized the importance of
standing up to special interest legislation and allowing the
experts at the RCA to do their jobs.
House Bill 111 now goes to the Governor for approval. For a copy
