FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
GCI GAINS 10,000TH CABLE MODEM CUSTOMER! ALASKANS SIGN UP FOR
HIGH-SPEED INTERNET SERVICE AT 3X NATIONAL RATE
Anchorage, Alaska - Alaskans feel the need for
speed. Today, General Communication, Inc. (GCI) announced that it
has passed the 10,000 subscriber mark for its high-speed Internet
access service. The company estimates that customers in Alaska are
signing up for its cable modem service at three times the national
average.
In addition, dial-up users continue to grow at a rate of
approximately 500 per week. About half of those are completely new
to the Internet and sign-up for access because of the company's
free basic Internet service that is bundled with its long-distance
offering.
According to Terry Nidiffer, GCI vice president of Internet
services, Alaskans' appreciation for Internet services is easily
understandable given the state's geographic distance from the lower
48 states.
"Largely because we are so far away from the contiguous United
States, Alaskans have a greater need to communicate and to stay
connected," said Nidiffer. "The Internet creates a virtual
Interstate highway between Alaska and the rest of the world."
And it appears that Alaskans like to drive the virtual
Interstate highway faster than others. At month's end, GCI reported
that it provides cable modem service to 10,400 customers in
Anchorage, Fairbanks, Juneau and surrounding areas.
GCI first began offering cable modem service in November 1998.
Today, GCI's cable modem service provides 256 kilobits per second
(Kbps) to 1,024 Kbps access speed for as low as $39.99 per month.
Users receive free activation, the first month of service free and
24-hour technical support via telephone or on-line. Each cable
modem can support up to eight computers.
The cable modem service appeals to families, professionals who
work at home, investors, students and people who enjoy interactive
computer games.
GCI (NASDAQ:GNCMA) is Alaska's largest Internet service provider
with more than 65,000 dial-up, cable modem and digital subscriber
line residential and business customers. The company also provides
voice, video and data services to more than 180,000 customers
throughout the state. More information can be found at www.gci.com.
