GCI REACHES NEW LOCAL TELEPHONE SERVICE MILESTONE 60,000
Access Lines in Service and Still Growing
ANCHORAGE, AK - - General Communication, Inc.
(GCI) announced today that it has reached a major milestone among
competitive local telephone companies. Four and one-half years
after passage of the 1996 Telecommunication Act, the company has
turned-up service on its 60,000th access line, representing 30.8
percent of the Anchorage telephone market. GCI estimates that this
is one of the highest market penetrations in the nation for any
competitive local provider.
According to Ron Duncan, GCI president, the company's steady
increase in market penetration is good for both consumers and the
company.
"Consumers are enjoying the benefits of true competition in
terms of lower prices, more choices and better technology," said
Duncan. "GCI continues to add new local customers and is on target
to achieve its ninth quarter of above 6 percent sequential
subscriber growth."
Duncan added, "GCI has acquired more than 2,000 new local access
lines since September 30, 2000. Of this total, 1,000 new access
lines have been acquired in the past 10 days largely because of the
company's new local, long-distance and Internet package called The
Real Deal. The continued success of our local service strategy in
Anchorage and the excitement The Real Deal is generating reaffirms
our expectations for fourth quarter revenues of $73 million to $75
million and EBITDA of $17.5 million."
Today, GCI provides facilities-based local telephone service in
the Anchorage market to residential and business customers using
its state-of-the-art digital switching and fiber optic network.
More than 90 percent of its local access lines are carried on its
facilities. Since GCI began local services in Anchorage in October
1997, the company estimates that its customers have saved more than
$7.5 million in local charges, and the market as a whole has saved
more than $18 million.
In October of this year, the Regulatory Commission of Alaska
approved GCI's interconnection agreement with the incumbent
telephone company to provide competitive local telephone service in
Fairbanks and Juneau. GCI anticipates initiating service in those
markets by the fourth quarter of 2001, and expects Fairbanks and
Juneau consumers to experience similar benefits from effective
competition as Anchorage consumers have.
GCI (NASD:GNCMA) is an Alaska-based integrated communications
provider delivering voice, video and data services through its
fiber optic, satellite, hybrid fiber coaxial and metropolitan area
network facilities. More information about GCI can be found at
